Statistics About School Libraries
The federal government does collect statistics on school libraries but the last major survey done in 1994 is not yet available! Each year, Miller and Shontz collect some statistics for School Library Journal.

(order from CRB, 900 N Street, Suite 300, Sacramento, CA 95814; tel. 916-653-7843) - a report prepared at the request of Assembly Member Kerry Mazzoni covers a wide variety of important topics about technology including the need for support of library media programs. A must read.

As you read this, would you agree that such a position is needed? In chapter 4: "Computer Teacher Versus School-Level Technology Coordinator," (t6q.pdf) Moursund continues to outline personnel needs. Does he come to grips with the library media teacher role? In chapter 7: "The School District Technology Coordinator," (t6r.pdf), Moursund turns attention to the role of the district person. How is this different than a district library media coordinator? In chapter 8: "General Qualifications to be a Technology Coordinator," (t6s.pdf), Moursund outlines competencies needed for TCs. Are these competencies any different than those of a library media teacher? In chapter 9: "Technical Qualifications to be a Technology Coordinator," (t6t.pdf) Moursund outlines what you need to know about networks and machines. Should the library media teacher really know all these things?

"The Knowledge You Need: Updated Requirements for Library Media Specialists," School Library Journal, June, 1998, p. 36-55. - Perrit reviews the cetification requirements for all 50 states. Her information for California is not correct so one wonders about the rest of the data, but it is, nevertheless, a starting place.

"The Invisible School Librarian: Why Other Educators Are Blind to Your Value," School Library Journal, November, 1997, p. 24-29. - Hartzell, a former principal is very critical of how little power school librarians wield when they have potential for so much. A must read.

One would assume that word processed essays receive higher scores than handwritten ones. Not so, but this article covers how to eliminate bias against kids who word process. (a moot point as everything goes to word processing).
