in the Multicultural Arena

General Resources 

•Web Sites

• Try the Multicultural Resources for Children site for a wide variety of links and sources to multiculutral information and professional articles.

• Scholastic has a web site titled How to Choose the Best Multicultural Books. Since this is a commercial site, you can expect some bias, but also some good stuff.

• Check out Paul Gorski's web page, Multicultural Pavillion from the University of Virginia. Has lots of links to articles, lesson plans, other web sites, etc.

• Professional articles

Setting as a Multideminsional Influence on the Characters in Multicultural Literature by Dr. Gloria Houston, Western Carolina University.

Writing Multicultural Children's Books by Harold Underdown. Underdown is a children's book editor and has useful links attached to this article.

 

The Hispanic Experience

The Pura Belpre' Award is given by ALSC, a division of the American Library Association to promote the highest quality children's literature for the Latino Community.

The African American Experience

The Corretta Scott King Award (w10f) is given by the CSK Task Force of the America Library Association's Social Responsibilities Round Table, for African American authors and illustrators whose distinguished books promote an understanding and appreciate of the culture and contribution of all people to the realization of the "American Dream."
