Fiction
Brooks, Bruce. The Moves Make the Man. Harper and Row, 1984. Notes: With incredibly vivid language, this award winner follows young Jerome Foxworthy and his interpretation of life and friendship as making moves on a basketball court.
Lipsyte, Robert. The Brave. Harper Trophy, 1991. Notes: Sequel to "The Contender", this tale narrates the gutsy Sonny Bear as he fights his way from a life of crime to hope, while taming the monster the lives within him.
Knudson, R. R. and Swenson, May. American Sports Poems. Orcahrd Books, 1988. Notes: You can smell the competition and feel the action from this unique collection of prose taken from a wide variety of sports and experiences.
Wallace, Rich. Wrestling Sturbridge. Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., 1996. Notes: A genuine small town American story of Benny, whose main focus is wrestling. Although he's not the state champ, he finds lots of purpose and contentment. His diary entries are priceless.
Walter Dean Meyers. Slam! Scholastic Press, 1996. Notes: Award winning story of the difficulties facing a talented basketball player who learns to win in sports and in the struggle to rise above the challenges of the oppressive inner-city.
Bissinger, H. G. Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team and a Dream. Harper Collins, 1990. Notes: A great look at the Permian Panthers of Odessa, Texas. Reveals everything right and wrong with small town American high school athletics.
Dent, Jim. The Junction Boys. St. Martin's Press, 1999. Notes: A new release that captures the grueling effort and the relationships forged by coach Bear
Non-fiction
Garner, Joe. And the Crowd Goes Wild. Sourcebooks, Inc., 1999. Notes: As the cover states "Relive the most celebrated sporting events ever broadcast". Includes 2 audio CD's with great moments like "The Catch", Secretariat's Triple Crown and Mark McGuire's #62.
Smith, The Ultimate Soccer Almanac. RGA Publishing Group, Inc., 1998. Notes: Excellent resource that covers the famous players, teams and matches of soccer history. Also includes helpful chapters for young players to learn and improve their game.
Maraniss, David. When Pride Still Mattered: A Life of Vince Lombardi Simon & Schuster, 1999. Notes: A very close look at the disciplines of life that made up the character of pro football's icon.
Bird, Larry. Drive: The Story of My Life. Doubleday, 1989. Notes: The Boston Celtic's Hall-of-Famer shares a personal and enjoyable narrative of his life.
Krone, Julie. Riding For My Life. Little Brown and Company, 1995. Notes: The record breaking woman jockey shares of her determined recovery from a mid-career injury.

Johnson, Earvin "Magic" with Novak, William. My Life. Fawcett Crest, 1992. Notes: One of many basketball star biographies. This one unique as it details his public announcement and battle with the HIV virus. Glamorizes the "floating orgy" of the NBA.
Krugel, Mitchell. Michael Jordan. St. Martin's Press, 1992. Notes: Yes he rose high above the rest. And his trials were also well known, played out in the press. But this just represents one of dozens of biographies that try to capture the incomparable MJ. Boys who love him or the bulls would be the few to really enjoy this.
Montana, Joe and Raissman, Bob. Audibles: My Life in Football. Avon Books, 1986. Notes: Without a doubt the most disappointing read of the semester. Very self-centered and egotistical. This hall of fame quarterback offers very little outside of his world to any reader.
Abdul-Jabbar, Kareem with McCarthy, Mignon. Kareem. Warner Books, 1990. Notes: Certainly an interesting person, perspective and career. This man dominated basketball for both college and the pro's for quite some time. His book, like many others, tells the story of a superstar, but not of a champion whose character rises above the greatness of his game.
Magazines
Sports Illustrated. Time Inc. December, 1999. Notes: The "hands down" best sports magazine for adult and young adult readers.
Sports Illustrated for Kids. Time Inc. December, 1999. Notes: Excellent younger version of the adult serial, with a very playful spirit.
Gravity Magazine. Peter Publishing Company. December 1999 Notes: First of many issues covering the Gravity Games where athletes "get air".
Thrasher. High Speed Productions Inc. December, 1999. Notes: Long time owner of the skateboarding news and culture. Shocking but revealing.

Necessary Roughness. Notes: Losing team of misfits wins with lots of laughs along the way.

Rocky. Notes: A no name finds that belief in great things can take him to the pinnacle of boxing.
The Program. Notes: Popluar culture with serious issues mix in this high profile college football story. Many adult themes, like sex, drugs
and abuse.

Sport Video Games
Playstation's NFL Blitz 2000 Notes: Lots of options for formations, plays and strategies. "On fire" feature lets players turbo past opponents. One of the two most popular football games on the market.
Playstation's Knockout Kings Notes: Best feature is picking from the greatest boxers ever, which may teach a little history along the way to punching and jabbing. Good graphics and allows for combinations too.
Playstation's Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Notes: One of the highest rated and most popular games of all games available. The name recognition along attracts players as well as the graphics, the challenging courses and the moves with names like Christ Air and Judo Madonna.
Sega's NFL 2K Notes: Players get really exited about the Dreamcast system by Sega. Very detailed graphics and more options than you can possibly learn in a year. Allows selection of players name, skin color, nose size and even if his socks are up or down. Most popular feature is the play by play announcer who adlibs the whole time while you play.
