Latest News on Treasure Mountain as of 8-31-05:
- Please check this website the last week of September for final details and also just before you leave for it.
- If you have not notified David Loertscher of your snail mail address and the nights you are staying at the retreat center, please email him immediately at davidl@slis.sjsu.edu
- Transportation to Gilmary retreat center: Luckily the retreat center is only 5 minutes from the airport and across the street from the Charlie Brown shuttle. When you get your bags at the airport you can call the Charlie Brown shuttle from the call center boards and they will pick you up. You may tip your driver, but do not pay him a fare. Instead, the $5.00 transportation fee should be paid when you register at Gilmary. We are going to inquire if the shuttle service can take folks into town after the retreat is over. News on that later. If you go back to the airport the fee will be another $5.00 that can be paid before you leave.
- There are no eating establishments near Gilmary, so if you happen to arrive in the middle of the afternoon, you might want to have lunch at the airport before you come. If you have any dietary restrictions you should let David Loertscher know immediately.
- Accomodations are for 2 people per room. When you check in, you can select a roommate. Bathrooms are down the hall. For those arriving the night before (October 4th) there may be a pre-conference free seminar in the morning (October 5th). More news on that later.
- We hope to mail proceedings of the conference to you a week before it occurs so that you can read the various article on the plane.

Treasure Mountain History
The first "Treasure Mountain" research retreat was created in 1989 by David Loertscher, Blanche Woolls, and Philip Turner. Their dream was to provide researchers in the field of school library media studies an opportunity to share their research, gather ideas, and interact with practitioners "in the field." Involving library professionals in the retreat was thought to be key in ensuring that basic research could produce benefits and applications with meaning and value for school librarians.
Named after the famous Treasure Mountain in Park City Utah where early miners dug a 200 foot hole and extracted $2million in silver, the conference was health at Treasure Mountain Inn overlooking the mountain. Treasure Mountain Research Retreat has no formal organization, has no official connection to AASL (but often meets before its national conferences), and has always tried to run its operation on a shoe string so that most folks could afford to attend. .
Each of the seven TM retreats has had a theme; these included:
- 1989: The Research of School Library Media Centers, TM I October 1989 (Park City, UT)
- 1991: Information Literacy, TM II June, 1991 (Atlanta GA)
- 1992: Researcher Practitioner Partnerships: Applying Qualitative Methodologies to School Settings, TM III October, 1992 (Annapolis MD)
- 1993: The Power of Reading: The effect of Libraries and Reading Promotion on Reading Competence, TM IV June, 1993 (New Orleans, LA); December 1993 (New Brunswick, NJ)
- 1997: Future Scenarios for School Library Media ProgramsTM V November, 1994 (Nashville, IN)
- 1997: Instructional Interventions for Information Use TM VI March/April 1997 (Portland Or)
- 1999: TM VII AASL Birmingham
- 2000: Treasure MT VIII January 2000 (San Antonio, TX)
- 2001: TM IX Information Rich Environments (Nashville, IN)
- 2002: TM X Treasure Mountain Institute at the ELMS (Excelsior Springs, MO)
- 2003: TM XI Evidence-Based Practice (Kansas City, MO)
Conference Papers or summaries of papers for Treasure Mountain retreats I-VI have been published by Hi Willow Research and Publishing and School Library Media Annual (vols: 10-13).
